Question:
Travelling from Guildford to Bristol, best train route?

I have an interview at a uni at 10am (so annoying with all this travelling 11am would have been MUCH more convenient). Anyway, as it is, I have to get a train at 6am from my local station (Cobham, Surrey) in order to get to Bristol station for a good time. I find this dreadfully irritating as the distance from Surrey to Bristol really isn't that far so how come the train journey is going to take such a length of time. Anywho I really need to be at Bristol Temple Meads by 9:15 so I have time to get a cab to the campus etc, I wanted to know if there are any other routes that would get me there on time and avoid this horridly early start. I've already checked out maybe going from Walton instead but it seems that will take longer.

Any help would be great. If there's no other option, then no worries

For travel within the UK I use this travel planner:

http://www.transportdirect.info/

It can do station to station but also door to door and several other options.

It agrees with your plan of changing at Reading.

If you can, plan to take an earlier train, so you have a good chance if the trains run late.

PLEASE do not listen to the people who tell you to use the Northern Line, as Waterloo is on the West End branch which DOES NOT serve King's Cross - you would need to change at Euston from the northbound West End line to the southbound City branch. I go with suggestion that you either take the bus (but perhaps not such a good idea with a large bag) or use the Bakerloo/Victoria Line option. Quite honestly, if you are really unsure, take a taxi.

If you are going to the UWE you'd be better off getting a train from Reading to Bristol Parkway; it's much closer.

Cobham/Guildford/Reading change for Bristol is the only viable option

Get the train to Reading and pick up a Bristol HST from there
